TAILORED SKINCARE: How to Look After Oily Skin
Your Oily Skin Routine
Is your skin looking oily, feeling congested and prone to acne and congestion? Chances are you have naturally oily skin. If a smooth, clear, matte complexion feels out of reach, it may be time to switch up your skincare regimen in favour of products specifically formulated to balance out your skin’s oil levels.
Not familiar with your skin type? This guide will help you identify whether or not your natural skin condition is oily, what causes that excess oil and how you can balance your skin’s natural oil production.

Do you have oily skin?
One of the easiest ways to identify an oily skin type is to give yourself a quick blotting paper test during the day (you don’t need specific blotting paper- a tissue or regular paper will do the trick!). Gently press the paper into your forehead, chin and cheeks, then hold the paper up to the light- if the sheet picked up a lot of oil, your skin is naturally oily.
Oily skin is caused by an overproduction of sebum, the skin’s natural moisturiser. Too much sebum can cause blocked pores, which is why oily skin is often prone to blemishes. The solution? A natural skincare routine rich in purifying, mattifying ingredients and products designed to extract and clear imperfections.

How to care for oily skin
The best routine for oily skin is one that balances the skin’s oil production without stripping it of the all-important natural oils that our skin needs to function at its best and protect itself for environmental damage. Look for products formulated to give the pores a deep cleanse, clarify the surface of the skin and balance sebum levels. Charcoal is a particularly effective natural ingredient for detoxifying the skin, drawing out impurities and soaking up excess oil.

Cleanse
A gel cleanser, like the Sukin Oil Balancing Purifying Gel Cleanser, is the ideal first step in your skincare routine, working to remove excess oil, dirt, grime and bacteria without stripping the skin. This particular cleanser contains Bamboo Charcoal to remove toxins and unnecessary oils while Moringa, Coconut, Rooibos and Willowherb Extracts work together to keep the complexion looking and feeling clear.

Exfoliate

Exfoliation, ideally on every second day, is a great way of really getting into the pores to loosen up any acne-causing blockages and draw out impurities from within the pores. The Sukin Oil Balancing Pore Refining Facial Scrub, much like the aforementioned cleanser, is rich in Charcoal to balance the skin’s production of sebum while Willowherb soothes acne and associated inflammation.

Tone

Formulated to balance and refine the skin, the Sukin Oil Balancing Clarifying Facial Tonic removes any excess oils remaining on the skin post-cleanse to prep it for moisturiser, tightening the pores and refining the surface and overall appearance of the skin- an often overlooked, but essential step in maintaining the health of oily skin types.

Moisturise

There’s an overwhelming temptation amongst oily skin types to skip the moisturise step for fear of overloading the skin with oils. Quite the contrary- if we deprive the skin of moisture, we may dry oil the acne-causing oils but we’ll also be drying out the essential oils our skin requires to function at its healthiest. Choose a balancing moisturiser, like the Sukin Oil Balancing Mattifying Moisturiser, to deliver light hydration to oily skin while mattifying the skin’s surface and soothing inflamed, acne-prone skin.

Masque

A weekly detoxifying mask will provide the ultimate clean canvas for your new routine. A charcoal infused mask, like the Sukin Oil Balancing Anti-Pollution Facial Mask, will absorb toxins and excess oils from deep beneath the skin’s surface to reveal a clear, purified complexion. The appearance of pores are also minimised and shine is kept at bay thanks to a natural blend of quince, bilberry and pomegranate extracts.
